A big game called for big players with big character - a number of the squad were out with illness and injury, leaving a squad still jam-packed with quality. The match started in Stowe's favour with immediate pressure leading to a penalty corner for Stowe, which they were unable to capitalise on. This boosted Stowe and led them to take control of the game through the first ten or so minutes, having the majority of play without necessarily breaking into Rugby's D too often. Rugby then began to establish themselves, growing into the game and eventually winning a penalty corner, slipping to the left for a deflection to go 1-0 up, with ten to go before halftime. Stowe continued to push but were found wanting at the top end of the pitch.
At half time the game was thoroughly in the balance, Rugby likely feeling a bit lucky to be 1-0 up with the pressure Stowe had applied. The second half began and once again Stowe applied early pressure from the forwards to win a penalty corner within the first few seconds. Stowe were unable to capitalise, with the Rugby goalkeeper in great form, and beginning to feel as if he wouldn't be beaten. Rugby then turned the momentum and scored with a reverse bunt to near near post and quickly followed it up with a very lucky penalty corner routine that looped into the goal off a defender's stick. With 15 minutes left on the clock and the score at 3-0, the whole game became lopsided with Stowe dominating and creating multiple chances. Stowe finished the game with yet another penalty corner but the Rugby goalkeeper continued his fine form, clearing the ball capable.
The game finished 3-0 to Rugby, but with both sides in agreement that the scoreline was an unfair reflection of a tight game.
MVP went to captain Ben Cook for his excellent display at full back, keeping the defence tight and compact, whilst distributing up the pitch with precision throughout the day.
